Vandermeer & Smolinski Lead Mariners Against Coast Guard

NEW LONDON, Conn. (April 10, 2018) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy women's track & field team lost its head-to-head matchup against arch-rival Coast Guard on Tuesday up at the Bears' Nitchman Field. 

Sophomore Alexa Vandermeer (Grove Heights, Minn.) and freshman Kitara Smolinski (Bailey, Colo.) both led the Mariners with a second-place finishes. 

Vandermeer came in second in two events - the 100 meter dash (13.74) and the 200 meter dash (28.28), while Smolinski placed second in the javelin with a throw of 24.07 meters.

Up next, the Mariners will participate in the Queensborough Community College Relays this Saturday, April 14. Action is set to get underway at 11 a.m. at the Q.C.C. Track in nearby Bayside, N.Y.
