Volleyball Drops Home Skyline Match To Mount St. Vincent, 3-1, On Thursday Night

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Sept. 28, 2017) – On Thursday night, the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy women's volleyball team lost a Skyline Conference home matchup to the College of Mount St. Vincent, 3-1, at the Liebertz Gymnasium. The defeat drops the Mariners' record to 7-4 (2-1 Skyline) on the season, while the Dolphins improve to 7-6 (2-0 Skyline) with the triumph.

CMSV took a very close first set by the score of 25-23, but USMMA responded with its own 25-23 win in the second set to even the match up at 1-1. The Dolphins used a 10-2 run in the middle of the third set to help secure an eventual 25-15 W and put together seven straight points in the fourth set to turn a 19-14 deficit into a 21-19 lead before outlasting the Mariners, 25-22, to claim the victory.

Senior Kayla Gleason (Sound Beach, N.Y.) recorded a career-high 21 kills with a .263 hitting percentage and five digs. Classmate Dominique Pope (Silver Spring, Md.) was one dig shy of a double-double with 13 kills and nine digs and sophomore setter Kyleigh Kappas (Parker, Colo.) contributed 41 assists and five digs.

Junior Kate Lefler (Norman, Okla.) chipped in with 11 digs and senior Myckenzie Toler (Prunedale, Calif.) added seven from the back row, while classmate Tichina Carmon (Greenville, N.C.) had a match-high four blocks.

For Mount St. Vincent, sophomore Tara Maloney led all players in the match with 22 kills, while also picking up a double-double with 13 digs. Senior Nicole Henderson dished out a team-best 37 assists and freshman libero Alexandra Rio had a match-high 21 digs.

Up next, the Mariners will travel to Bard College this coming Saturday, Sept. 30, for a non-conference tri-match against City College of New York (1 p.m.) and Bard (3 p.m.). Live stats and live video feeds of both matches will be available with links on the USMMA Women's Volleyball Schedule Page.
