ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. (Sept. 30, 2017) – The USMMA women's volleyball team swept a pair of non-conference matches on Saturday at a tri-match hosted by Bard College. The Mariners opened the day with a win over City College of New York (25-17, 25-9, 25-8) and closed it out with a victory over the host Raptors (25-20, 25-13, 25-18).
In the CCNY match, the Mariners had three players record double-digit kills and the team out-killed the Beavers, 42-8, while also holding City College to a negative-.109 hitting percentage. Senior Dominique Pope (Silver Spring, Md.) had a double-double with a match-high 13 kills and 10 digs. Classmate Kayla Gleason (Sound Beach, N.Y.) and junior Kate Lefler (Norman, Okla.) both had 10 kills apiece and sophomore Kyleigh Kappas (Parker, Colo.) contributed 33 assists to the offense and nine digs defensively.
Pope again led the way offensively against the Raptors with nine kills, while Gleason added seven and tied for the team-high with nine digs along with senior Alex Miller (Stevensville, Mich.). Kappas dished out 24 assists in the straight-set victory.
Merchant Marine improves to 9-4 on the season with the wins. In defeat, CCNY fell to 3-11 and Bard dropped to 4-14.
Up next, the Mariners will travel up to Newburgh, N.Y., on Wednesday night, Oct. 4, for a Skyline Conference contest against Mount St. Mary that begins at 7 p.m. at the Knights' Kaplan Center. Live stats for the match will be available at this link.
