Volleyball Loses On The Road At Hunter

NEW YORK (Sept. 11, 2018) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy women's volleyball team lost its road non-conference matchup against Hunter College on Tuesday night in straight sets. The Mariners' record drops to 2-2 on the year, while the Hawks improve to 6-0. 

For the second-straight match, the scores of each set were incredibly close, as Hunter's largest victory came in the opener and it was only by three points, 25-22. Both the second and third sets were decided by identical scores of 26-24, with the third set a comeback victory for the Hawks. 

Freshman Taylor Gilbertson (Phoenix, Ariz.) recorded the Mariners' first double-double of the season with a match-high 11 kills to go along with 12 digs. She also put down a team-best four blocks on the night. Senior Kate Lefler (Norman, Okla.) added nine kills, while freshman setter Brittney Pinzon (Fullerton, Calif.) dished out 23 assists. Defensively, junior libero Nicole Ibinson (Fredericksburg, Va.) tied for the match-high with 19 digs. 

The Hawks spread out their offense, with four different players registering a team-best eight kills apiece - junior Kylie Hurst, sophomore Emily Wasson and seniors Taylor Haiduk and Marlena Budna. Senior Miranda Hogan added 31 assists, classmate Haley Trunkett picked up 19 digs and Hurst also chipped in defensively with 14 digs. 

Up next, the Mariners will travel up to New London, Conn., on Thursday, Sept. 13, for their annual matchup against arch-rival Coast Guard with a point on the line in the race for the 2018-19 Superintendents' Trophy. First serve is scheduled for 6 p.m. at the Bears' Roland Hall Gymnasium.
