16 1979 Dinghy Sailing Team

The 1979 Dinghy team is the first USMMA team to be inducted into the USMMA Athletic Hall of Fame. The squad won the Henry A. Morss Memorial Trophy, awarded annually since 1937; emblematic of the Intercollegiate Sailing Association National Championship. This group of sailors became the first team at Kings Point to win a national championship. The 1979 Dinghy Team consisted of Head Coach Ken Legler, URI ’77, Alex Smigelski ’79, John Duclos ’80, John Eckart ’80, Tom Lincoln ’80, Tito Giron ’81, Tom Lihan ’82, Bernie Rodal ’82, David Sloane ’82 and Gary Stewart ’82. This team produced five All-Americans, one College Sailor of the Year and a Stedman Trophy winner. The 1979 Dinghy Team had a highly successful fall campaign, with significant wins in the highly competitive New England area. Because of their success, the team ended the fall season ranked number one in the country, ahead of numerous national powers including Navy and Yale. The Kings Point dinghy team continued their domination of collegiate sailing during the spring season right up until they won the national championship regatta. This outstanding season sparked recruiting for Kings Point and helped bring some of the best sailors in the country into the program. Winning the national championship and ending the year as the #1 ranked team lead to four additional national championships in subsequent years creating an enduring legacy for the Kings Point sailing program.
