RANDALLS ISLAND, N.Y. (Aug. 31, 2019) – The USMMA men's soccer team won its season-opener on the road against John Jay on Saturday, 2-0. The Mariners scored a goal in each half and got a five-save shutout from senior tri-captain Matthew Milner (Mount Airy, Md.).
Fellow tri-captain senior Alex Madonna (Gibsonia, Pa.) opened the scoring in the 33rd minute when he received a pass in the box from junior Zach Lysakowski (Reading, Pa.) and fired it past the Bloodhounds' junior keeper Steven Towler.
Despite being outshot 6-5 in the opening half, Merchant Marine took that one-goal lead into the halftime break. Milner made four of his five stops in the opening 45 minutes.
The Mariners applied more pressure in the second half with six shots on goal to John Jay's one, and sophomore Daniel Murphy (Sandwich, Mass.) doubled the lead with an 81st minute tally assisted by senior Austin Flores (Wichita, Kan.), who provided a cross into the box off of a free kick that Murphy blasted into the bottom right corner.
For John Jay, junior Mark Shnadshteyn led all players with six total shots, with two of them on goal. Towler finished the game with six saves.
The Mariners have a big test coming up this Wednesday, Sept. 4, as they will travel to face nationally-ranked Ramapo College. Kickoff against the #14 Roadrunners is scheduled for 4 p.m. in Mahwah, N.J., at Ramapo's Athletic Center Turf Field.
