MAHWAH, N.J. (Sept. 4, 2019) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy men's soccer team was defeated on the road by nationally-ranked Ramapo College, 3-0, on Wednesday afternoon at the #14 Roadrunners' Turf Field. The setback drops the Mariners' record to 1-1, while Ramapo improves to 1-0-1.

The Roadrunners came out strong from the start, firing off four shots in the opening 20 minutes – the first was turned aside by USMMA freshman keeper Chase Miller (Boise, Idaho), another was blocked by the Mariner defense and the third resulted in a corner kick, Ramapo's third of the game. It was off the corner that a header by senior Bashkim Saiti found the back of the net to open the scoring for the hosts.

They doubled their lead in the 40th minute on a tally by freshman Thiago Stallhbaum. Merchant Marine was held without a shot in the opening half, and the Roadrunners finished with five.

There was a flurry of active early in a back-and-forth second half. The teams combining for 10 shots in the first 20-plus minutes, five for each side. The Mariners had three on goal – two saved by RC's junior keeper Joshua Schaffer and another on a defensive save, and Miller turned away one Roadrunner shot on goal.

Saiti scored his second goal of the game with just over five minutes to play to seal the victory for Ramapo.

Miller ended the day with three saves for USMMA and Schaffer stopped five Mariner shots in the second half – with junior Zach Lysakowski (Reading, Pa.) leading the Mariners with three shots on goal.

Up next, the Mariners will host the Bombers of Ithaca College this Sunday, Sept. 8, at 12-noon in their home-opener on Tomb Field at Brooks Stadium. Live links to follow along will be available on the USMMA Men's Soccer Schedule Page
