KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Sept. 7, 2019) – The USMMA men's soccer team raced out to a 2-0 lead on Sunday over regional powerhouse Ithaca College and used a great defensive effort to hold off the visiting Bombers and earn a 2-1 Parents Weekend victory. With the win, the Mariners move to 2-1 on the year, while Ithaca suffers its first loss and drops to 3-1.

Senior Nick Roros (Northport, N.Y.) tallied his first collegiate soccer goal after scoring over 100 points for the Mariner men's lacrosse team the past three years. His marker came in the ninth minute off of a beautiful throw-in by junior Zach Lysakowski (Reading, Pa.) that led a streaking Roros right to the near side of the box and he ripped a shot into the lower left to open the scoring.

Merchant Marine doubled its lead in the 23rd minute. Lysakowski raced down the near side and cut back around a defender before executing a perfect pass to sophomore David Kelly (Lutherville, Md.) at the top of the box that Kelly blasted through the Ithaca keepers' hands just under the crossbar to make it 2-0.

Total shots were even in the first half, 5-5, but the Mariners held a 3-2 advantage in shots on goal. Senior keeper Matthew Milner (Mount Airy, Md.) turned aside both Bomber SOGs – one in the second minute and another in the 41st. The USMMA defense also did a great job getting in the way of attempts, as they blocked two during a four-minute flurry for Ithaca in the 14th minute and the 18th minute.

The visitors applied a bit more pressure in the second half, outshooting the Mariners, 8-4, including three on goal. Milner made two more saves in the frame – one coming in the final four minutes. The Bombers missed an opportunity to get on the board in the 69th minute, when the ball traveled from the near side to the far side and then back down low past Milner to Ithaca senior Zack Lichtman at the near post, but Lichtman's stretching one-timer attempt went over a wide-open net.

The Bombers did get on the board in the 73rd minute when sophomore Thomas Pierce sent in a corner from the near-side that caromed into the net off a Mariner defender in a crowd down low for an own goal.

From there, Ithaca out-shot Merchant Marine, 4-2, with two quick chances in the 73rd minute – one that hit the crossbar and another that sailed high – and two more in the 87th minute – the first saved by Milner and the final attempt that went wide right. The Mariner defense held the Bombers without a shot in the final three minutes, even though the ball was in their defensive end a majority of that time.

Milner finished with four saves, while Ithaca's senior keeper Max Lichtenstein turned aside two USMMA shots.

The Mariners are back in action this Wednesday afternoon, Sept. 11, when they travel to Hackettstown, N.J., for a non-conference matchup against Centenary College that will begin at 4 p.m. at the Cyclones' Reeves Field. As of right now, no live links are available for the contest, but if there are any they will be available on the USMMA Men's Soccer Schedule Page
