PATCHOGUE, N.Y. (April 17, 2019) – In a rematch of the 2018 Skyline Championship game, the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy women's lacrosse team outdueled St. Joseph's-L.I., 16-6, on Wednesday evening at the Golden Eagle's Danzi Stadium. The Mariners improve to 12-0 (5-0 Skyline) on the season, while SJC falls to 6-6 (4-3 Skyline).
Five USMMA players recorded multi-goal games on the night – freshman Jessie Wohner (Norfolk, Va.) led all scorers with eight points on four goals and four assists, both tying team-highs. Wohner scooped up a team-best six groundballs and tied a team-high with three caused turnovers. Senior Meredith Willard (Portland, Maine) recorded six points with two goals and four assists, while collecting four draw controls.
Freshman Maddie Schmidt (Mechanicsville, Va.) posted five points on four goals and an assist. Senior Jessica Reilly (Sayville, N.Y.) won a team-best six draw controls to go along with four points (three tallies and one helper), while junior Grace McHugh (Sturbridge, Mass.) buried two goals and caused three turnovers, tying a team-high. Senior Maura Malone (Yorktown, Va.) also found the back of the net once to round out the Mariner scorers.
The Mariner defense forced 30 St. Joseph's turnovers for the game. Senior goalie Hannah Gizzi (Finksburg, Md.) got the victory after making four saves.
After trading the first four goals, USMMA scored the next two to increase the margin to 4-2, at 18:06 of the first half. St. Joseph's got back within one at 15:36, before Merchant Marine closed out the half with two-straight tallies to lead 6-3 at the midway point.
USMMA carried the momentum into the second half scoring five of the first six goals to open up a 12-4 lead at the 17:03 mark. The Mariners never looked back as they motored to a 16-6 decision.
For the Golden Eagles, sophomore Tori Staker and senior Nicole Stoppelli led the way with three points apiece. Staker registered a hat trick and Stoppelli scored once and dished out a team-best two assists. Junior Diana Johnston took a game-high eight draw controls and found the back of the net twice. Senior goalie Lindsay Ramos made 13 stops in the losing effort.
The Mariners are back in action this Saturday, April 20, for a non-conference home game against Stockton College beginning at 1 p.m. at Brooks Stadium. Prior to opening draw, the USMMA women's lacrosse program will pay tribute to its seven graduating seniors with a special Senior Day ceremony.
