BROOKLYN, N.Y. (Sept. 5, 2019) – Going into Merchant Marine's road, non-conference tilt at Brooklyn College on Thursday night, senior Kyleigh Kappas (Parker, Colo.) sat at 1,969 career assists. She reached the 2,000-assist plateau late in the third set and finished the night with a match-high 33 helpers in the Mariners' straight-set victory over the Bulldogs, 25-13, 25-12, 25-14. In victory, USMMA improves to 2-0 on the young season, while Brooklyn falls to 1-2.
Two Mariners recorded double-digit kills on the evening, as sophomore Shelby Bowman (Redmond, Wash.) and freshman Paige Smith (Virginia Beach, Va.) both put down 10 each. Bowman hit at a .562 clip over the three sets. Sophomores Cadee Fromm (Enid, Okla.) and Taylor Gilbertson (Phoenix, Ariz.) contributed nine and seven kills, respectively.
Senior libero Nicole Ibinson (Fredericksburg, Va.) led all players in the match with a career-high 24 digs, while Bowman and Gilbertson both tallied seven digs apiece. Sophomore Juliet Vendl (Colorado Springs, Colo.) registered a match-high three service aces.
For the Bulldogs, freshman Ashley Fung had a team-best seven kills, junior Yana Shaposhnikova picked up 11 digs, and sophomore Ezri Shor recorded seven assists and six digs. Brooklyn hit .000 on the night (17 kills-17 errors/86 attempts).
The Mariners return to action this Saturday, Sept. 7, with a non-conference tri-match at Montclair State in New Jersey.
